2004 Mengku Spring Raw Pu-erh Tea

3 reviews

When raw or sheng pu-erh tea is aged well it acquires a depth that seems almost endless. This pu-erh tea from Mengku region of Yunnan is a good example of that. Made from a high elevation spring picking of 2004, this pu-erh tea has matured acquiring a full but yet a soft body. Honey, nuts, herbs, earthy notes emerge through many steepings if this tea is prepared in gong fu style.

The soup (or the liquor) is much darker than younger sheng pu-erh teas. An aftertaste of camphor leaves a pleasant mouthfeel.

The leaves are large with many buds reflecting  a fine picking. The tea was stored in Guangdong, a place with high humidity for most of its life. The condition of the tea says the storage was well done: this organic pu-erh tea has acquired a good fermentation level with the flavors bright and balanced.

This is a very good pu-erh tea for a gong fu session. One of the best raw pu-erhs we have had!

Gong fu style

Use around 4 gm of tea for a 150 ml gaiwan
Water temp: 190F
First steep - rise
Subsequent steeps 3-4 secs each time.
Later around 10 steep we let it steep for 2 minutes. The flavor was still full without any bitterness.

First experience with an aged sheng, and I was totally blown away. Great flavor—almost a briney earthiness, with a ton of sweetness. Shipping was quick and easy, price is great for the quality.

An Excellent Aged Tea!

This was my first purchase from Happy Earth, but it certainly won't be the last! Thick, syrupy mouthfeel with a stewed cherry fruitiness and honey sweetness. Mouth-watering, with almost none of the astringency you might expect from a younger sheng. I could tell the storage was very clean, as the liquor has no mustiness or muddling of flavors! This is a tea you can expect to keep you company all day. Super pleased with it.

This was my first Puerh so I don't want to put a lot of words on it but my impressions were; clean forest floor, water, latex note I find in many camellia sinensis playing hide and seek, very nice calm energy. I could drink this every day but I think I will buy more and reserve it for when I feel inspired.
