by Niraj Lama May 28, 2020 0 Comments

It's getting warm and toasty out there. Guess what's it time for? Iced Tea!!!

Let me share with you today a very easy method of making iced tea. It is a method we use at Leaf Tea Bar. It is a very easy way to make iced tea this way. There is no need to wait for the tea to cool, and you can make this practically with any tea. I love it with Darjeeling first flushes and other lighter delicate teas.

Staying Sane During Stay-At-Home

Staying Sane During Stay-At-Home

by Niraj Lama May 01, 2020 0 Comments

It has been around six weeks since we have been confined to our homes. Handling bosses and projects remotely, challenges of home-schooling, lack of socialization, stream of negative news and political rancor that refuses to diminish would wear out the best of us. Given that, I want to share some centering practices that may help you keep your sanity and find a little peace.

Jun Chiyabari Nepal on COVID-19 and First Flush 2020

by Niraj Lama April 26, 2020 0 Comments

Last week we received an email from Bachan Gyawali, the owner of the farm, updating us about the current status at Jun Chiyabari. We were happy to hear some positive news and we thought of sharing it with you here. I will extensively quote Gyawali because it gives you a sense for what it is like on the other side of the planet - almost the same as it were here. The challenges and the triumphs (there are few but they are there) in a world that has never felt this small before.

Differences Between First Flush, Second Flush and Autumn Flush

by Niraj Lama April 22, 2020 0 Comments

So you might have heard us use the term first flush, second flush and autumn flush particularly when talking about teas from Darjeeling and Nepal. What do these terms mean? Very simply they are used to distinguish different tea productions on the basis of seasons.

COVID-19 and Its Impact on Tea Production

COVID-19 and Its Impact on Tea Production

by Niraj Lama March 27, 2020 0 Comments

Darjeeling first flush 2020 tea, as well as tea from Nepal for the season, will be a rare commodity this year. This sweeping pandemic has brought most of the world to a halt, including tea production. The timing is particularly sad, because now is when plucking begins for some of the world’s finest tea – Darjeeling.

Types of White Tea

Types of White Tea

by Niraj Lama March 11, 2020 0 Comments

Premium white tea is made primarily from the freshest shoots of yet unopened tea leaves and with minimal processing. Organic white tea can be described as the most pristine form of tea. Not much is done to the leaf - just withering in the sun, piling it up for a while for slight oxidation to set in and then gently baked. No rigorous rolling, pan-frying or shaping.

Location matters for a tea garden

Location matters for a tea garden

by Niraj Lama September 19, 2019 0 Comments

The quality of fine tea is dependent on many qualities, with sunlight, soil content, and elevation drastically effecting the finished product. A lesser known factor, however, is the direction a hill slopes while growing tea.

Tea Garden Visits - India Summer 2019

by Niraj Lama August 18, 2019 0 Comments

Two things I most love about my job - spending time with customers, and visiting the tea gardens back east. Every time I am driving around the hills where the tea is grown, the beauty of the place makes me feel utterly blessed that I can do this for a living.

India Trip, Summer 2019

India Trip, Summer 2019

by Niraj Lama August 16, 2019 0 Comments

I just got back from India after a two and a half week trip. Although it was not the intent but me and my travel companion, who in this case happened to be my 12 year old daughter, Tara, ended up "Chasing the Monsoons", like the travel writer Alexander Frater in his once popular book. And like Frater discovering -  in our case rediscovering - the overwhelming life force of India even as the heavens hosed down the sub-continent.

Visit to Roji-en, Japanese garden in Delray Beach, Florida

by Niraj Lama February 24, 2019 0 Comments

"Strolling through a pine forest or bamboo grove, viewing the rock formations, arrangement of plants, and cascading waterfalls, pausing to ponder the quiet surface of the lake and the shoreline - little by little we are encouraged to lay aside the chaos of a troubled world and gently nurture the capacity within to hear a more harmonious, universal rhythm…This is the tremendous power the Japanese gardens at Morikami Park hold for us." - Hoichi Kurisu, Master Garden Designer of Roji-en.

Toronto Tea Festival, 2019

by Niraj Lama February 03, 2019 0 Comments

After nine years of residing in Rochester, I finally crossed over to the other side of Ontario Lake, to get to the Canadian city of Toronto - thanks to its annual tea festival. For the efforts - which included an early rise and a hangover from the polar vortex of the century - we were richly rewarded. Our day trip was filled with many cups of warm wonderful teas, encounters with equally warm tea enthusiasts, and topped off by a documentary on Darjeeling tea!
